Ever have an experience where your blood starts pumping and your heart feels like it's going to pound right out of your chest? I got to have one of those experiences Saturday on my little five mile run. Jen and I planned to run together and she suggested that we go run a trail that we both LOVE. When she first suggested it I got all excited. "Yes!, that sounds like so much fun." Neither one of us thought it would be that bad, not taking into account that it is a northern facing mountain trail. At this point it might also be nice to insert that Jen may need a level headed friend that could maybe help be sensible about ideas such as these, instead of climbing on board the insane train. However, after we were safe I couldn't help think what a fun adventure that was (which is why we get along so well.)

It was great starting out but then we soon ran into snow. We both decided to keep going because the snow didn't seem too bad. However it didn't take long before we ran into obstacles such as fallen trees (the inside of my legs paid for that), or patches of ice. Oh yes. And I forgot to mention we were both wearing our monkey feet that have zero traction. Still, we were able to go across or around without too much difficulty. Until we came across this.....

If only you could see this in real life. There was nothing but cliff above and below us covered in shale rock. This huge patch of ice was not level in any way shape or form. We had options though. Option number one.....go all the way back the way we came. Nope, neither one of us wanted to do that even though that probably would have been the smartest choice. Option number two....try and climb the cliff above us and go around. Nope, we tried that and that didn't work. It was too steep with nothing to grab on to. Option number three....figure out how to cross the ice. Nope, I didn't want to do that either but as Jen inched her way across it looked like that was going to be the best...provided that we didn't slip to our death.

She hung onto this sturdy
icicle to help get her across all the while I'm praying that she doesn't slip and then realizing that if she does get across, it will then be my turn....yikes! She made it and guided me through her every step, holding out a long stick for me to grab onto. That makes me laugh so hard now because that wouldn't have done anything for either one of us if I had slipped. That shows how calm we were being about the whole thing. After I made it across we hugged. After all, we had just cheated falling down a cliff.

This is the picture taken from the road of where we were battling the ice. If anyone saw us, I'm sure it was a sight.

It took me a few steps along the trail again for my heart to stop racing. This is us at the bottom of the trail. Don't we look happy? I guess we'll have to wait for that trail to thaw out a little before we try it again.
You might need a new friend. That's all I'm sayin'. One that doesn't endanger your life on new and exciting running adventures.
